This March, our Monthly Screening Spotlight turns toward a film that moves through dreams, sound, and the cosmos.

Spectacular begins with a "signal".A celestial guide sends a call across time and space, reaching a small group of Voyagers. Responding to the transmission, they journey through a series of natural dreamscapes and shifting capes, landscapes that feel both earthly and otherworldly. Their path is uncertain, but it leads them toward a place of refuge: an interstellar world where safety, imagination, and possibility converge.

Blending storytelling with striking visual textures, Spectacular unfolds as an Afrofuturist meditation on survival, migration, and belonging. The film imagines escape not as disappearance, but as transformation, an act of collective dreaming that reaches beyond the limits imposed on our bodies and communities.

The creators behind Spectacular are a music collective composed largely of BIPOC and queer artists from across Asia, Africa, and Canada. For over two decades, they have cultivated a devoted following within underground music and performance scenes, creating work that merges sonic experimentation, performance, and visual storytelling. Their artistic practice resists borders, drawing from diasporic rhythms, spiritual cosmologies, and radical imagination.

With Spectacular, the collective expands their universe into film, crafting a work that feels at once intimate and cosmic, an invitation to travel together through sound, image, and possibility.

The online screening of Spectacular will run from March 25 to March 28, culminating in a live Q&A with the creators on March 28, where audiences will have the opportunity to learn more about the collective’s creative process and the worlds that shaped the film.

This event is Pay What You Can. Contributions directly support queer artists and cultural workers facing precarity, censorship, and displacement, and help sustain our growing archive. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. If you’re able, we kindly suggest a $20 donation.

Thank you for showing up, your presence makes us stronger.
