Last Saturday night, Under the Radar returned for the first screening of our summer series. We screened a program of short films from Lebanon, Uganda, Tanzania, and India at Le Champ des Possibles, where stories of queer joy, desire, resilience, and solidarity unfolded beneath the trees in the heart of Mile End.

A rabbit greeted us at the entrance and led us through the wooded labyrinth. By the time we reached our picnic table, it had already been claimed. We moved a little further down the path and unknowingly found ourselves in one of Montréal's cruising grounds.

Sometimes a site chooses the program.

Among the films was Lost & Found by Shrenick Jain, a playful story of seduction, cruising, and theft. Only a few metres away, people wandered through the very landscape the film seemed to echo. Truth became stranger than fiction as the story unfolded like a queer Don Juan tale before our eyes.

The path itself is a shortcut through contradiction. At one end stands a nunnery, enclosed behind towering stone walls, built to protect a life of celibacy. At the other lies a landscape long associated with clandestine queer encounters and desire. There is a quiet poetic justice in this geography. Between these two worlds, the films invited us to imagine something beyond the binaries they represent. The films did not transport us somewhere else. They revealed another layer of the place we were already standing on. As freight trains rumbled past and airplanes crossed overhead, the boundaries between Montréal and the worlds on screen quietly dissolved.

Perhaps that is what Under the Radar is becoming. Not simply outdoor screenings, but conversations between cinema and the places that hold them. Every site contains another story beneath its surface. Sometimes all we have to do is stop, look, and listen.

ON THE FESTIVAL CIRCUIT

This summer, 75 SHOTS Pocket Cinema travels to Europe.

We're honoured to have been invited to present at the WorldPride Amsterdam Human Rights Conference, where we'll join artists and activists from around the world in conversations on queer rights and cultural resistance.

We'll also be taking Under the Radar to the streets of Amsterdam, transforming public spaces into temporary cinemas with a program of queer films from the Global South. Alongside the screenings, we'll facilitate Pocket Cinema workshops with queer refugees, creating space for storytelling, solidarity, and collective creation.
